Not Just a Degree: How Struggles Shaped My Path to Success

By Mohammad Nasir Yaya

Three years ago, I walked through the gates of the Federal University of Kashere as a Direct Entry student. It was an unfamiliar community, and I carried a mix of excitement and uncertainty. I had dreams in my heart and determination to grow, but I didn’t know what the journey ahead would hold. What followed was a rollercoaster of experiences that shaped the man I am today.

It wasn’t just about earning a degree—it was about resilience, sacrifice, understanding people, and staying focused amid chaos. There were tough days: moments of self-doubt, times when finances were tight, and academic pressure seemed unbearable. Assignments piled up, exams tested more than knowledge, and balancing personal life with school often felt impossible.

There were also moments of isolation when I felt left behind, and days when the weight of expectations nearly broke me. Sleepless nights, emotional burnout, and countless struggles became part of the journey.

They say “No pain, no gain.” But Barewa College, Zaria, taught me something deeper: “No strive, no success.” With that mindset, I kept pushing. Looking back now, I see not just the hardships, but the strength they built in me. It wasn’t a smooth road, but it was a meaningful one. Alhamdulillah—glory be to God Almighty.

As this chapter closes, my heart is filled with gratitude, reflection, and humility. My university years were more than academics; they were a test of strength, patience, and self-discovery.

This journey wouldn’t have been possible without the people God placed around me.

To my father, Mal. Yaya Harisu Kumo—thank you for your sacrifices, endless prayers, and unconditional support. You stood by me through every phase, believing in me even when I doubted myself. You are my cornerstone, and truly, my untouchable pillar.

To my siblings and relatives—your love, encouragement, and quiet support gave me strength. You have always been my safe space.

To my coursemates and friends—it is never easy to say goodbye to those you laughed, cried, studied, and succeeded with. Yet, because of the bonds we shared, our last moments together became celebrations, even without knowing what tomorrow holds. Some of us will remain connected, while others may fade away as life scatters us in different directions. One day, when we look back at our pictures, all we can do is smile and cherish those moments as history.

To my teachers, mentors, and guides—thank you for the knowledge and wisdom you shared. Your dedication shaped not only my mind but also my outlook on life. I remain deeply grateful for your humility, wisdom, and incredible commitment.

This journey has ended, but the lessons will remain with me forever.
