Gombe Government Approves Major Infrastructure Projects and Agricultural Subsidy
In a significant move to enhance the state's infrastructure and agricultural productivity, the Gombe State Government has approved several key projects, including the dualization of major roads, bridge repairs, and upgrades to university facilities. This was disclosed by Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi, Secretary to the Gombe State Government, following the 39th State Executive Council (SEC) meeting chaired by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya at the Government House.
Among the highlights, the government sanctioned the dualization of a crucial road segment in the state capital. The project will start from the Federal Teaching Hospital Junction along Bauchi Road, passing through the Police Headquarters, and extending to the Federal College of Education (Technical), continuing along Ashaka Road. The contract, awarded to Triacta Nig Ltd for N20.4 billion, is expected to be completed within 12 months.
In addition to road improvements, the SEC approved the procurement of 2,500 metric tonnes of fertilizer, which will be distributed to farmers at a 50% subsidy. The fertilizer, priced at N22,000 per bag compared to the market price of N45,000, aims to support the 2024 farming season. Distribution is scheduled to begin later this month to ensure timely availability to farmers.
Professor Njodi emphasized the importance of these initiatives, stating, "The fertilizer is highly subsidized to ensure it is affordable for our farmers, which will help achieve a bumper harvest and enhance food security in the state."
The Commissioner for Works, Housing, and Transport, Engr Usman Maijama'a Kallamu, elaborated on the infrastructure projects, noting that the road dualization covers 18.5 kilometers, including the construction of road networks in BAP 4 and along Ashaka Road. Additionally, emergency repairs have been approved for road washouts and culverts on the Dukku-Dokoro Road in Dukku LGA. A two-span bridge will replace the collapsed six-cell box culvert at a cost of N1.593 billion, with a completion timeline of four months.
In the education sector, the SEC approved N587.6 million for the construction and provision of essential facilities at Lincoln University, Kumo Campus. This funding is part of an MoU between the Gombe State Government and a Malaysian university, aimed at fast-tracking accreditation and commencing academic activities.
The Commissioner of Higher Education, Hon. Muhammad Shattima Gadam, reaffirmed the government's commitment to improving educational infrastructure, saying, "This approval is crucial for fulfilling our part of the agreement with Lincoln University, ensuring the timely start of academic programs."
Health Commissioner Dr Habu Dahiru highlighted the broad impact of these projects, asserting that they reflect Governor Inuwa's dedication to improving the lives of Gombe residents. "The fertilizer subsidy will boost food production and reduce food prices, providing much-needed relief to our citizens," Dr Dahiru stated.
These developments mark a significant step forward in Gombe State's efforts to enhance infrastructure, education, and agriculture, promising substantial benefits for its citizens.
