In a significant operation aimed at safeguarding federal government policies and ensuring a stable supply of fertilizers to farmers, the Special Intelligence Squad of the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has successfully apprehended five suspects involved in a syndicate responsible for diverting granular ammonium sulfate, a key raw material in fertilizer production.
This is contained in a statement by the Corps Public Relations Officer, Afolabi Babawale where he says the operation took place in Jos, Plateau state Nigeria.
Afolabi Babawale, reported that these saboteurs had illicitly diverted granular ammonium sulfate, which belongs to the Fertilizer Producers and Suppliers Association of Nigeria (FEPSAN). The diverted product was then repackaged and sold to unsuspecting buyers and farmers at a staggering rate of 25,900 naira per bag.
On September 2, 2023, at approximately 1720hrs, the Commandant General's Special Intelligence Squad acted on credible intelligence, raiding two separate locations in Jos: No 3, Dogon Dutse area, Jos North, and Kasuwa Kara area, Bukuru. During the operation, a significant quantity of diverted bags of Granular Ammonium Sulfate (GAS) was recovered. GAS is a crucial ingredient in fertilizer production, intended to be provided to farmers at a subsidized rate as part of the federal government's commitment to sustaining national food security and promoting agricultural production.
Five suspects were apprehended at these locations, and a substantial number of bags containing various fertilizer products and materials were confiscated. The arrested suspects include Ibrahim Muhammed (63), Ladan Anas (26), Umar Said Muhammed (37), Hambale Usman (46), and Junaid Ubale (30). The seized items also included 740 bags of prohibited granular ammonium sulfate, 24 bags of Dangote Urea fertilizers, 65 bags of Indorama fertilizers, 130 bags of NPK Barbados fertilizers, 29 cartons of ultrachol chemicals, and 109 (20) liters of knapsack spraying pumps, among other items.
Commandant General of the NSCDC, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, mni, OFR, has been fully briefed on the situation and has ordered the immediate transfer of the five suspects and the case file to the National Headquarters of the NSCDC. Further investigations are underway to dismantle any potential links to this fertilizer diversion syndicate.
This operation underscores the commitment of the NSCDC to safeguarding federal government initiatives aimed at ensuring food security and supporting agriculture in Nigeria. The arrested suspects will face the full weight of the law as authorities work tirelessly to eradicate such illegal activities that threaten the nation's agricultural stability.
