North-East Governors Unite to Address Regional Challenges: 10-Point Communique Released
Maiduguri, Borno State - Saturday, September 9th, 2023
In a significant display of unity and commitment, the North-East Governors' Forum (NEGF) comprising the Governors of Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, and Yobe, along with the Deputy Governors of Gombe and Taraba, gathered for their 8th meeting in Maiduguri, Borno State. The forum expressed enthusiasm about the strengthening cooperation and camaraderie among the leaders of these six states, emphasizing their dedication to pursuing shared goals for the region.
Following extensive discussions and deliberations, the NEGF issued a 10-Point Communique addressing key issues affecting the North-East region:
The forum extended gratitude to Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima for attending the opening ceremony and commended Borno State for hosting the event.
While acknowledging progress against insurgency, the forum highlighted the emerging threat of banditry in the region, particularly in Bauchi, Gombe, and Taraba states. They urgently called upon the Federal Government to address this new security challenge.
The NEGF expressed concern that some traditional leaders and local authorities are colluding with bandits. The forum unanimously pledged to take decisive action against any such leaders found sheltering or aiding criminals.
The proliferation of mining, both legal and illegal, raised alarms within the forum, as it's linked to insecurity and the misuse of mining leases. They urged governments to enforce compliance with mining policies and the Land Use Act.
Climate change and environmental degradation were identified as major issues, leading to flooding and deforestation. The forum called for Federal Government intervention to desilt rivers and regulate deforestation. They also committed to global initiatives for climate mitigation.
Neglected road and railway infrastructure, especially along the vital Enugu-Maiduguri Economic Corridor, was highlighted. The forum urged the Federal Government to reconstruct these crucial transportation routes to enhance regional trade, peace-building, and national unity.
The forum agreed to adopt the Education Law 2022 as recommended by the Northeast Education Council, aiming to enhance education standards in the region.
The Northeast Development Commission (NEDC) was urged to be more proactive in addressing development needs in the region, prioritizing sustainable development.
A commitment to boost subregional commerce and revive the Northeast trade fair in Bauchi in January 2024 was made.
The NEGF announced plans to hold its 9th Meeting in Yola, Adamawa State, from November 3rd to 4th, 2023.
