Federal Government Urges NLC to Suspend Planned Strike Amid Economic Challenges

September 4, 2023 -

In a press conference held today at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, the Honorable Minister of Labour and Employment, Rt. Hon. Simon Bako Lalong, addressed the impending 2-day warning strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its affiliates, urging them to reconsider their actions.

The Minister began by acknowledging the challenges faced by Nigerians, particularly workers, due to the removal of petrol subsidy and other government policies aimed at renewing hope for the nation's future. He reiterated the government's commitment to improving citizens' livelihoods and minimizing the hardships caused by these policies.

Highlighting the steps taken to cushion the impact of fuel subsidy removal, the Minister mentioned measures such as the distribution of rice and grains to vulnerable citizens, the disbursement of funds to states for palliatives, and the promotion of alternative energy sources. He also assured that the government would address the issue of minimum wage.

The Minister expressed concern over the conflict between the Nigeria Police and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and pledged to resolve the issue through dialogue. He also called for calm in disputes between organized labor and state governments.

Regarding alleged violations of workers' rights in the aviation sector, the Minister stressed the importance of following proper procedures and existing legislation. He urged all parties to act within the law.

The Minister addressed the issue of security challenges, emphasizing the need for support to security agencies in tackling criminal activities. He discouraged industrial action in response to these challenges, instead advocating for citizens to report incidents to authorities for resolution.

Finally, the Minister responded to concerns raised by the FCT Minister regarding the proposed demolition of illegal structures, assuring that actions would be within the confines of the law and the Abuja Masterplan.

In conclusion, Minister Lalong appealed to the NLC to suspend their planned 2-day warning strike, emphasizing the importance of working together to resolve issues and avoid actions that could further worsen the conditions of Nigerian citizens.

The government remains committed to addressing the challenges faced by workers and citizens and aims to deliver hope, unity, and progress for the nation.
