Federal Government to Extend Conditional Cash Transfer Program to 15 Million Households
Abuja, August 31, 2023 - The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled ambitious plans to significantly expand its social safety net program, known as the "Conditional Cash Transfer" (CCT), with the aim of reaching a staggering 15 million households. This announcement was made by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, during a meeting with the World Bank Country Director, Mr. Shubham Chaudhuri, at the bank's headquarters in Abuja.
Dr. Edu expressed deep appreciation for the continued support extended to Nigeria by the World Bank in critical sectors such as education, health, agriculture, private sector development, and social services, among others. She emphasized the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's "Renewed Hope" agenda, which led to the renaming of the ministry, focusing on lifting people out of poverty and addressing humanitarian challenges directly.
"The flexibility of the World Bank to align with the re-focused agenda of the Ministry to eradicate poverty is a welcomed development," Minister Edu declared.
One of the significant initiatives announced is the creation of the "Renewed Hope Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund (HPATF)," which is expected to be funded through various sources, including the Federal Government's budgetary provisions, development partners, the international community, taxes, and contributions from the private sector.
Furthermore, Minister Edu highlighted the need for the World Bank's support in expanding the National Social Register (NSR) and requested technical assistance to work toward President Tinubu's poverty reduction targets.
In response, Mr. Shubham Chaudhuri, the World Bank Country Director, pledged full support for the Ministry's new focus. He announced the proposed disbursement of $800 million for the Social Safety Nets Project, which is expected to begin soon. The World Bank also committed to assist in the verification and scaling up of the National Social Register, provide technical support for the Ministry's participation in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), and offer specialized backing for the establishment of the Trust Fund.
This ambitious plan underscores Nigeria's commitment to addressing poverty and improving the welfare of its citizens, with the support of international partners and organizations like the World Bank.
