Adamawa State Government Takes Swift Action to Regulate Inland Waterways Commercial Transport

Adamawa, Nigeria - September 12, 2023

In response to recent tragic canoe mishaps that have claimed lives in Adamawa, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has taken decisive steps to enforce regulations governing commercial transportation on inland waterways.

The Governor issued this crucial directive during his visit to condole with the community in Gurin, Fufore Local Government Area, following a devastating boat accident earlier this week that resulted in the loss of lives. The unfortunate incident occurred at Kwatan Mallam Adamu in the Gurin village, and it tragically followed another similar accident at Njuwa River in Yola South, where more than ten lives were lost.

Governor Fintiri, who had just returned to the state from Abuja, wasted no time in conveying his condolences to the affected community and immediately ordered all relevant government agencies to initiate actions to enforce regulations governing waterway operations throughout the state.

To enhance safety measures, he also directed traditional rulers and local government authorities to ensure strict compliance with these forthcoming regulations, particularly emphasizing the need to curb overloading, which has been a significant concern. The safety of the people was of utmost importance, he stressed.

In a bid to prevent further tragedies, Governor Fintiri announced the government's plan to provide life jackets to passengers at key boat crossing points in Adamawa. This proactive measure aims to reduce the loss of lives in the event of accidents.

Governor Fintiri also urged residents not to travel on waterways during rainy weather to safeguard their lives, and he emphasized that the government would not tolerate lax attitudes in this regard.

In response, the District Head of Gurin, Alhaji Abubakar Baba Gurin, expressed gratitude to Governor Umaru Fintiri for his visit and pledged the support of the traditional institution for government policies.

Authorities have confirmed that the boat, carrying over forty passengers, capsized in the middle of the river due to strong winds and tidal waves, resulting in two casualties, with twelve individuals rescued, while others remain missing. This series of tragic incidents has prompted swift government action to prioritize the safety of inland waterway commuters in Adamawa State.
