The Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Dr. Abubakar Y. Suleiman (Dangaladiman Ningi), has urged young people to actively participate in politics as a pathway to effective governance and sustainable development.
In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Mukhtar Garba Kobi, the Speaker made the call while addressing youths at a mentorship initiative for aspiring party leaders and prospective political candidates organised by the International Republican Institute (IRI) in collaboration with the National Endowment for Democracy (NED). The programme is aimed at promoting democratic participation and encouraging the inclusion of under-represented groups in the political process.
Rt. Hon. Dr. Abubakar described youths as leaders of tomorrow and challenged them to rise to leadership responsibilities with courage, integrity and a strong sense of accountability. He stressed that transparency, integrity and accountability are not mere catchphrases but the foundation upon which effective governance and public trust are built.
He encouraged participants to engage actively during the mentorship sessions by asking questions, sharing ideas and learning from the experiences of established political leaders. According to him, the initiative also provides an opportunity for young people to build lasting networks that will support their political aspirations.
The Speaker commended the International Republican Institute and the National Endowment for Democracy for their consistent efforts in strengthening democracy and promoting youth inclusion in governance. He noted that collaborative initiatives of this nature are crucial to building a credible, inclusive and professional political environment.
He further urged stakeholders to work collectively to ensure that youth voices are heard and that young leaders are adequately prepared to contribute meaningfully to governance and nation-building.
