The Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly and Member representing Ningi Central Constituency, Rt. Hon. Dr. Abubakar Y. Suleiman (Dangaladiman Ningi, Barden Kudun Katagum), has called on the Bauchi State Government to enforce the implementation of the Farmers/Herders Board Law to address recurring clashes arising from encroachment on grazing areas.
In a statement signed by the spokesperson of the Speaker, Mukhtar Garba Kobi, the call was made through a motion presented by Dr. Suleiman during plenary on Wednesday. The motion, according to the Speaker, was aimed at bridging misunderstanding while putting an end to lingering clashes between farmers and herders which often result in destruction of farmlands, loss of cattle, injuries, and sometimes deaths.
“Despite the enactment of the law, its implementation has been lax, leading to continued clashes as farmers increasingly encroach on designated grazing areas, prompting herders to take the law into their own hands,” Dr. Suleiman explained.
He emphasized that strict enforcement of the Farmers/Herders Board Law, coupled with the protection of grazing reserves and cattle routes, would significantly reduce conflicts, boost agricultural productivity, and promote peaceful coexistence in the state.
According to him, adopting the motion would strengthen peace, enhance security, and support sustainable development by addressing the root causes of farmers-herders clashes. He also urged the House to commend Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed (Kauran Bauchi) for his administration’s ongoing efforts to foster unity and stability among farming and herding communities.
The Speaker concluded by urging the Executive to ensure adequate funding for the board’s operations, direct local government chairmen to enforce the 7-meter road reserve to protect grazing routes, and impose sanctions on violators of the law.
