IGP Emphasizes Collaboration and Technological Advancements in the Fight Against Cybercrime
The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) has made significant strides in combating cyber threats targeting the banking and financial sector and protecting the public from High-yield Investment Fraud (HYIF). In a recent symposium attended by compliant and fraud desk officers from banks across Nigeria, the NPF-NCCC emphasized the need for active collaboration in the ongoing battle against cybercrime.
Responding swiftly to emerging cyber threats, the NPF-NCCC initiated a coordinated, intelligence-led operation from August 16th to 20th, 2023. This operation led to the arrest of eight notorious cybercriminals who were involved in a new cyber threat involving cloned banking websites facilitating high-yield investment scams and money laundering.
The apprehended suspects have been identified as Nwaonicha Emeka, Osaretin Oghomwen, Sunday Aniekan, Devine Daniel, Ibrahim Abdulaziz, Daniel Breba Omamuke, Muhammed Azimeye, Aniwen Abraham, Pasca Obinna, and Godwin Chinaza, all residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). They have confessed to their involvement in various criminal activities and will face charges upon the conclusion of the investigation.
Efforts are underway to inform and support victims of these fraudulent schemes on a global scale. Additionally, authorities have confiscated the fraudulent online platforms involved in these activities. Members of the global cyber community are urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious platforms through the dedicated e-reporting portal at incb.npf.gov.ng.
Inspector General of Police IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, NPM, Ph.D., reaffirmed his commitment to leveraging technological advancements in the fight against crime. He commended the NPF-NCCC's efforts and encouraged its Director, DCP Uche Ifeanyi Henry, to intensify collaboration with other agencies while upholding fundamental human rights to reduce cybercrime and cyber-related crimes to the minimum in Nigeria.
This operation represents a crucial step in safeguarding Nigeria's financial sector and the public from cyber threats, demonstrating the NPF-NCCC's dedication to ensuring a safer cyber space for all citizens.
