Governor Inuwa Yahaya Elected Chairman of Northern States Governors' Forum








Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has been elected as the chairman of the Northern States Governors' Forum (NSGF). The decision was made unanimously by the 19 northern governors during a forum meeting held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja on Tuesday.

Governor Inuwa will assume the position on 29th May 2023, taking over from


Governor Simon Bako Lalong of Plateau State. In his In his acceptance speech, Governor Inuwa expressed his commitment to justifying the confidence placed in him by his colleagues across party lines. He vowed to uphold the forum's positive legacy and work towards a better future for the people of the northern region.

The newly elected chairman emphasized the importance of economic development as the driving force behind the NSGF's agenda during his tenure. Governor Inuwa acknowledged the challenges faced by the region, including insurgency in the North East, ethnic and religious conflicts in the North Central, and farmers/herders clashes. He assured his fellow governors that the forum, under his leadership, would address these challenges in the best interest of the people.

Governor Inuwa expressed his delight with the ongoing drilling activities in the Lake Chad Basin and other drilling sites in Gombe, Bauchi, and Nasarawa States. He pledged to focus on the exploration of the significant oil, gas, and solid mineral deposits in the North for the benefit of the people.

Furthermore, Governor Inuwa thanked the outgoing chairman, Governor Simon Bako Lalong, for his exceptional leadership despite the numerous challenges faced by Plateau State and the entire northern region. He pledged to work closely with the past leadership of the forum to build on the progress achieved so far and promote social cohesion, economic emancipation, and infrastructural development.

Governor Simon Bako Lalong highlighted the eventful and challenging four years of his stewardship. He mentioned that the forum had dealt with various issues affecting the northern states individually and the region as a whole. He acknowledged the efforts made to address security challenges such as kidnapping, banditry, terrorism, and other violent crimes. Despite the progress made, Governor Lalong stressed the need for continued collaboration with the federal government and security agencies to ensure lasting security in the region.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya's election as the chairman of the Northern States Governors' Forum signals a new chapter for the region's development and highlights the collective determination of the northern governors to address the pressing challenges and explore the vast economic potential of the North for the benefit of its people.
