When Nigeria gained independence on October 1st, 1960, the world watched with anticipation as a nation blessed with abundant human and natural resources took its place on the global stage. However, the current situation tells a different story. The suffering experienced by Nigerians today is unimaginable. While Nigeria is often referred to as the 'Giant of Africa,' the question arises: what features support this title?

Presently, Nigeria bears the grim distinction of being the world capital of poverty. According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, 71 million people live in extreme poverty, and 133 million are classified as multidimensionally poor. This reality contradicts the notion of Nigeria as a giant of the continent.

Moreover, the title fails to resonate with the country's current state because it is marred by leaders whose primary goal is to embezzle public funds for personal gain. Meanwhile, the impoverished populace continues to suffer, while these leaders flaunt their ill-gotten wealth.

Nigeria, the so-called giant of Africa, grapples with pervasive social injustice and corruption. Leaders of high status engage in looting and embezzlement, exacerbating the plight of the already struggling citizens. Additionally, the country faces alarming levels of crime and insecurity. Law enforcement personnel, entrusted with the duty to protect Nigerians, are often diverted to serve crime barons and dubious individuals.

Furthermore, one of Nigeria's most pressing issues is ethnic and religious bigotry. This divisive sentiment results from poor leadership, hindering national unity and progress.

In conclusion, Nigeria can regain its luster only if we unite as Nigerians, setting aside regional, religious, and ethnic differences. The path to recovery demands a collaborative effort from both the government and the governed.
