Havana, Cuba - In a compelling address to world leaders and delegates from over 100 countries at the G77+China Leaders’ Summit, Nigeria's Vice President emphasized the critical importance of cooperation and partnership to tackle global challenges.


On Friday, at the Palace Convention in Havana, Cuba, Nigeria's Vice President took the stage to deliver a stirring speech at the ongoing G77+China Leaders’ Summit. The summit, attended by heads of state and government, UN Secretary-General Antonio Gutteres, and delegates from across the global South, was a platform for addressing pressing global issues.


Vice President highlighted the paramount significance of cooperation as the guiding principle in navigating the complexities of the modern world. He stressed that, regardless of geopolitical tensions, nations should unite in a collective effort to pursue a path of shared prosperity and progress.


"Nigeria is committed to forging partnerships within the G77+China to confront global challenges," he affirmed, indicating the nation's resolve to champion initiatives harnessing the power of science, technology, and innovation to overcome economic hurdles, especially within the global South.


Under the theme "Current Development Challenges: The Role of Science, Technology, and Innovation," the Vice President underscored the pivotal role played by these elements throughout history. From the phases of the Industrial Revolution to the present, science and technology have shaped nations' destinies.


He titled his speech "From Pandemic to Paradigm Shift: Nigeria's Road to Reinvention," recognizing the transformative power of innovation, especially in the context of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and climate crisis.


Nigeria's dedication to advancing innovation in science and technology includes fostering a vibrant knowledge economy and promoting the free exchange of ideas. The Vice President pointed out that Nigerian talent contributes significantly on the global stage, spanning from tech innovation to medical expertise.


Moreover, Nigeria's response to the COVID-19 pandemic has positioned it as a global hub for mRNA vaccine production, marking a significant milestone in the nation's scientific achievements. 

The Vice President also highlighted Nigeria's youthful population as a source of strength, driving innovation across various sectors, from telemedicine to agricultural automation, with the aim of improving daily lives.


In the face of the climate crisis, Nigerian innovators have not been idle. Initiatives like the Climate Action Africa (CMA) Labs have emerged to address climate change challenges, such as droughts, flooding, and agricultural complexities.


The Vice President issued a sobering reminder that the consequences of inaction on climate change could jeopardize the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He urged leaders to act promptly to address these pressing global issues and ensure a sustainable future for all.
