By: Firddausi Ibrahim Musa Dear Dreamer, Today is a new day, full of endless possibilities to bring your dreams to fruition. There may be obstacles in your way, but there is an unbreakable barrier between you and your dreams that you can overcome with effort. Effort is the key to success and cannot be negotiated or avoided. Procrastination is the enemy of effort. Waiting for tomorrow only wastes time as it never comes. Time passes quickly, and every second that slips away is a missed opportunity to make a change. Do not wait for tomorrow, for it is not promised. Fight against procrastination and seize the day. As a dreamer, you must rise like the sun that shines on even the darkest of days. Shine like a star that cannot be extinguished. Be ready to face whatever challenges come your way, for you are a warrior armed with faith, hope, and honor. Learn to resist the comfort of a cozy blanket and embrace the sweat and hard work required to achieve your dreams. Life is a bumpy ride, and rej...

Maternal Mortality in Nigeria

Image
By Aliyu Adamu Yusuf Maternal mortality and morbidity continue to be a public health concern, particularly in developing countries with high maternal mortality rates. Nigeria is the second-highest contributor to maternal mortality globally. What are the most common causes of these maternal deaths in Nigeria? In my perception, there are some factors that prevent women from receiving or seeking cure during pregnancy and childbirth, such as: Health system failures that result in poor quality of care, including disrespect, mistreatment, and abuse, insufficient numbers of and inadequate training for health workers, shortage of essential medical supplies, and poor accountability of the health system. Social determinants, including income, access to education, race, and ethnicity that put some sub-populations at greater risk. Harmful gender norms and/or inequalities that result in a low prioritization of the rights of women and girls, including their right to safe, quality, and affordable sex...

DRUG ADDICTION

Image
By: Halima Tatabo Addiction is a disease that affects both the brain and behavior. It's characterized by the inability to resist the urge to use drugs, despite the harm they may cause. Getting treatment for drug addiction at an early stage can help prevent some of the more severe consequences of the disease. It's worth noting that drug addiction is not limited to illegal drugs like heroin or cocaine; legal substances like alcohol, nicotine, sleep, and anti-anxiety medications can also be addictive. Additionally, prescription or illegally obtained narcotic pain medications or opioids can also be addictive, and this problem has reached epidemic levels in the United States, with opioids playing a role in two-thirds of all drug overdose deaths in 2018. Initially, individuals may choose to use drugs because of the pleasurable sensations they provide. They may believe they can control how much and how often they use them. However, over time, drugs alter the functioning of the brain...

Guarding your virginity

Image
UmmuKulsum Abubakar Ibrahim It is a sacrosanct fact that every woman desires a peaceful and prosperous life without regrets, sadness, or sorrow. To earn people's respect, one needs to practice self-discipline, self-restraint, commitment, and resilience. Above all, respect is reciprocal. As someone determined to succeed in life, I take it upon myself to be committed and resilient in pursuing my goals. To achieve that, I guard my modesty jealously and avoid indulging in any act capable of tarnishing my future, bringing shame to my family, or jeopardizing my prospects of attaining higher positions in life. Unfortunately, some women face serious setbacks in their pursuit of higher positions due to their past immoral acts. It is disheartening to see some women take their modesty for granted, selling it for a pittance. I wonder why some female students, despite their parents' efforts to provide them with basic needs and wants, indulge in immoral activities that they consider as civ...

Sara-Suka Menace in Jos, and our 'I don't care attitude'

Image
Usman Muhammad Salihu The Sara-Suka menace in Jos, Nigeria, is a significant problem that has persisted for many years. Sara-Suka is a term used to describe a gang of young men who roam streets armed with machetes, knives, and other dangerous weapons. These gangs are notorious for their violent attacks on innocent people, including robbery, assault, and even murder. Despite the severity of their actions, the community members, parents, and some unpatriotic security personnel have shown an "I don't care" attitude towards the menace. The origins of the Sara-Suka gangs in Jos can be traced back to the early 2000s when the town experienced a period of religious and ethnic violence. Many people were then affected by the violence including young men. Over time, some youths evolved into criminal organizations that engage in various forms of criminal activities, including drug trafficking and extortion. Despite the fact that the Sara-Suka gangs are well-known to their parents and...

Why voting should be made mandatory'For all eligible citizens' in Nigeria.

Image
Yahaya Aliyu In this quest to recruit political office holders in the state, democratic principle recognizes periodic elections as the best way in choosing leaders by all and sundry. Not only that, election is an instrument through which patriotic citizens troops out en masse to speak out their voices via ballot boxes all over the world particularly in Democratic States. Prelude to 2023 General Elections in Nigeria the Independent National Electoral Commission vigorously embarked on registration of eligible citizens above the required age of voting and those who have misplaced their issued permanent Voter Cards. There was an improvement significantly in the registration but what is more painful is the considerable decline in the voter’s turnout on the day of election. The corrobative reference in favour of this lingering issue to the just concluded 2023 General Elections which recorded a very low voter turnout. From the official revelation by INEC, almost 93 millions Nigerian citizens ...
